GETTING A PASSPORT
All persons must have their own passports, including infants. New applicants must apply in
 
person. Renewals apply through the mail. Passports are valid for 10 years for adults and five years for minors. To apply in person for a U.S. passport you must:

 
Provide application Form DS-11

Present proof of U.S. citizenship

- Previous U.S. Passport

- Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state

Present proof of identity

- previous U.S. Passport

- naturalization certificate

Provide two passport photos

2" x 2" in size, identical, taken in the past six months, showing current appearance, full face, front view with a plain white or off-white

background, between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, taken in normal street attire

Pay the applicable fee Provide a Social Security number To renew your passport:

Form DS-82 eligibility: Submit most recent, undamaged passport You are at least 16 years old
 
when your most recent passport was issued Your passport was issued in the last 15 years You use the same name on your recent passport. Or you had your named changed by marriage or court order and can submit proper original documentation to reflect the change. Passport Cards:

Wallet-size card that can only be used for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. (not for air travel)

Submit the same form and documentation as the passport book

The passport card will have a vicinity read radio frequency identification (RFID) chip. Customs and Border Protection inspectors will be able to access photographs and other biographical information stored in secure government databases. There is no personal information written to the RFID chip.

Regional Passport Agencies: For customers who are traveling within two weeks, or who need foreign visas for travel. An appointment is needed. Note: There is no charge for an appointment at a passport agency. Customers should not pay anyone or any business making such a charge.
